Steven Dean Ploen
Steven Dean Ploen was born on January 19, 1950 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Billy and Evelyn (Driver) Ploen. He attended elementary school in Minden, Iowa and graduated from Avo-Ha High School in Avoca, Iowa with the class of 1968.
He married Marcia Lemons on October 4, 1969 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Neola. Steve entered the Army on October 17, 1969. His first child Shawn would be born while he was serving in Vietnam. He served there one year and didn’t see Shawn until he was nine months old. They had three more children: Sonja, Shanda and Shaya.
Steve worked for Kellogg’s in Omaha, Nebraska as an electrician. He retired in May of 2013.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, friends and family. He also enjoyed golfing, starting projects he never intended to finish, working on the house, and his “quick” trips to the Minden Grocery with the idiots Fred and Chloe. Steve was one of the first EMT's in Minden and a long time member of the Volunteer Fire Department. He was a City Council Member, a lifetime member of the DAV, and the current Commander of American Legion Post #437 in Minden, Iowa.
Steve passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2016 having attained sixty six years, six months and eleven days. He was preceded in death by his parents Billy and Evelyn and in-laws Jim and Emily Lemons.
Left to cherish his memory: his wife of almost forty seven years Marcia Ploen of Minden, IA; his children: Shawn (Angela) Ploen and their children: Justin, Allyson and Madison of Minden, IA; Sonja (Andy) Rasmussen and their children: Wyatt, Marshall, Tallin, Grason, Dyson of Underwood, IA; Shanda (Chad) Heilig and their children: Madeline, Ashlyn, Kylynn, Joslin and Brooklyn of Avoca, IA; Shaya (Josh) Zacharias and their children: Carson and Callie of Eaton, Colorado; sisters: Joleen Sanders of Council Bluffs, IA; Maribeth (Roger) Dau of Shelby, IA; brothers: Mike (Kacie) Ploen of St. Louis, MO: Tim (Staci) Ploen of Minden, IA; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, family and friends.
