Susan Elizabeth Buck
September 24, 1952 — April 4, 2017
Susan Elizabeth Buck, daughter of John “Buzz” and Elaine (Thielen) Wendt, was born on September 24, 1952, in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and attended grade school at St. Mary’s of Portsmouth. She then went on to Harlan Community High School where she graduated with the class of 1970, the last graduating class of the old high school.
After high school, Susan moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where she worked with her uncle in his shoe store. While in Lincoln, Susan was in a bad car accident and moved back home to Portsmouth for her recovery. She then took a job with her aunt and uncle in Wichita, Kansas helping take care of their children. After a few years there, she returned to Iowa where she lived again in Portsmouth and worked for REM in Shelby, Iowa.
Susan was united in marriage to Steven Buck on February 24, 1975, in Portsmouth, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Chris, Cory, Jackie and Craig. After their marriage, Susan continued to work at REM until later taking a job at CDS in Harlan. Susan then opened up the No Sweat Fitness with her mother in Harlan and then opened her own No Sweat Fitness in Avoca, Iowa. Susan loved to cook and so began her career in culinary arts at the Dairy Queen in Shelby and with her sister Lucy and Peggy at their bakery in Harlan and also for her nephew at the Big House Bar and Grill in Persia and later also in Earling, Iowa.
Besides cooking, Susan loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed canning, going for car rides, sudoku and crossword puzzles, crocheting, occasional trips to the casinos shopping and special stops for one of her favorites: soft served ice cream or iced coffee.
Susan passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas, having attained the age of sixty-four years, six months and eleven days. She was preceded in death by her sister Karen Burke; sister in-law Rhonda Wendt and brother in-law Pat Burke; parents in law Rosco and Loretta Buck; granddaughter Abby Buck; nephews Pat Burke Jr. and Adam Barta.
Susan is survived by her husband Steven Buck of Tennant, Iowa; children: Chris Buck and his wife Rhonda of Tennant; Cory Buck and his wife Amanda of Audubon, Iowa; Jackie and her husband Roger Schumacher of Tennant; Craig Buck of Tennant; thirteen grandchildren; parents John “Buzz” and Elaine Wendt of Portsmouth, Iowa; siblings Lucy and her husband Ron Knauss of Portsmouth; John Wendt and his wife Mary Ann of Panama, Iowa; Larry Wendt of Portsmouth; Peg and her husband Robert Barta of Salado, Texas; Bev and her husband Rich Priestly of Salado; Traci and her husband Trent Schuning of Portsmouth; other nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.
