Sylvan John Klein

Sylvan John Klein, son of Leo and Lucine (Kramer) Klein was born on December 31, 1938, in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. He attended grade school in Westphalia until 1952,when he started high school in Portsmouth, Iowa. He graduated in 1957.
Sylvan worked construction for a year in Omaha, before he started his farming career in 1959. On January 26, 1963, he was united in marriage to Yvonne “Bonnie” Koster at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Two children were born to this union: Cheryl and Bob.
Along with farming, Sylvan also lugged meat at Western Iowa Pork. He retired in 2014 and moved to town in 2016. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and a member of Knights of Columbus since 1955.
Sylvan died on Friday, July 14, 2023, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa attaining the age of eighty-four years, six months, and fourteen days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Mary Koch and Delbert Klein.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Yvonne “Bonnie” Klein of Harlan, Iowa; children Cheryl (Rick) Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; Bob (Julie) Klein of Harlan, Iowa; grandchildren Ross (Katie) Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; Nate (Ilce) Andersen of Leavenworth, Kansas; Cali (Travis) Klein of Earling, Iowa; Nic Klein (Becky Blaalid) of West Des Moines, Iowa; Haley (Garret) Gilland of Halbur, Iowa; 6 great grandchildren, Calvin, Aubrey, Brantley, Wyatt, Henry, and Brantley; siblings Alice (Leo “Spike”) Kloewer of Harlan, Iowa; Kenny (Mary) Klein of Omaha, Nebraska; Rita Hatcher of Omaha, Nebraska; Gary (Mary) Klein of Memphis, Tennessee; Kathy Feldman of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law Leona “Jonesy” Klein of Westphalia, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
