Thelma Fern Lyman, the daughter of Dale and Bessie Brogden Cose, was born April 14, 1916, in Deloit, Iowa. She lived all of her single life in Deloit and attended school there. On February 15, 1932, Thelma was united in marriage with Merrill Lyman in the home of her parents in Deloit. Their union was blessed with six children: Gerald, Sheldon, Mavis, Garlyn, Gailen and Linda. After their marriage they worked as farmhands before farming on their own where Thelma was a dedicated wife and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. During their farming years they resided in the Schleswig, Battle Creek and Kiron areas. In 1965 they had a farm sale and moved to Denison where Thelma was employed at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital for seven years from which she retired. Thelma and Merrill celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1982. Merrill died November 28, 1983, and Thelma remained in Denison. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison and the United Methodist Women. In her spare time she enjoyed going out to eat, sewing, baking, entertaining family and friends, and loved when friends and family would just drop by for coffee. Thelma died Wednesday, November 26, 2011, at the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 95 years, 7 months and 9 days. Including her parents and husband, Thelma was also preceded in death by two sons: Gerald and Sheldon; six brothers: Curtis, Leonard, Mervin, Allen, Jess and Jennings Cose; two sisters: Wilma Ells and Irma Stevenson; and one granddaughter, Tammy Quandt Wiebers. Those remaining to cherish her memory include four children: Mavis and husband, Stan Skow of Mapleton, Iowa, Garlyn Lyman and wife, Mary of LeMars, Iowa, Gailen Lyman and wife Barb of Chandler, Arizona, and Linda and husband, Robert Quandt of Denison; two daughters-in-law: Norma Lyman of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Marilyn Lyman of Danville, Illinois; 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, one sister, Yvonne Holdsworth of Manilla, Iowa, sister-in-law, Laura Mae Cose of Deloit, Iowa, other relatives and friends.   Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church, Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service included the congregational hymns of “Nearer My God to Thee”, “Old Rugged Cross”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” with Nancy Miles serving as organist. Pallbearers included Mitch Lyman, Herb Quandt, John Bartlett, Gayle Cose, Steve Wiebers and Tommy Bubke. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and a luncheon provided by Staley’s Catering and the United Methodist Women.
