Therese Marie Henscheid was born on June 24, 1933 to Ray and Mary (Schechinger) Lickteig in Westphalia, Iowa. Her step-mother was Ada (Pippet) Lickteig. She graduated from St. Boniface Catholic High School, Westphalia, in 1951, and completed her nurse’s training at IWCC in 1968.
On December 30, 1952, Therese and Urban Henscheid were united in marriage. There were four children born to them: Jeron, Jim, John, and Joyce.
She loved the nursing profession and taking care of people. She was a farmer’s wife and family meant the world to her and she had many “adopted” children and grandchildren. She loved having fun, playing games, and acting silly with all of the kids, who adored her.
Therese’s many activities over the years include: 4-H, Community Betterment, Catholic Daughters of America, The Rosary Society, and organizing the Westphalia 125th Celebration in 1997. She loved watching sports, especially baseball and softball when her kids or grand kids were playing! The Westphalia Athletic Club honored her with the “Fan of the Year Award” for her support of all the ball teams in Westphalia (and the Newton baseball team). Therese did everything with intensity. She took on many projects from the painted spools of Elvis and others, stain glass making, wild flower garden, rose bush care planted by her mother, yard ornaments, cooking “Tontian batches” of food for family and hobbies collecting miniature shoes, angels, and Elvis memorabilia. When she dressed it was bling, stylish, tasteful, and elegant. She was German through and through. “You can tell a German, but you can’t tell them much.” She spent many hours on the phone to both coasts to family and friends and a pen pal in France.
Therese struggled for many years with a variety of health issues but she offered her suffering up to Jesus, and she never complained.
She was born in and resided in the same house until her illness forced her to move to Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling. Therese died on Friday, May 3, 2013 having attained the age of seventy-nine years, ten months, and nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Cletus and Ralph (Nancy) Lickteig, sister Sr. Raymarie Lickteig, and niece Judy Pauley.
Therese is survived by her devoted husband of sixty plus years Urban Henscheid of Westphalia, Iowa; children: Jerry Henscheid, wife Melissa of Harlan, Jim Henscheid, wife Joan of Clive, John Henscheid, wife Janet of Westphalia and Joyce, husband Dennis Mumm of Harlan, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister Thelma Pauley, husband Erv of Denison, Iowa; and brother Edward Lickteig, wife Cathy of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and sister-in-law Virginia Lickteig of Denison; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
