Therese Elizabeth Kenkel Scheuring was born on October 27, 1928, in Shelby County, Iowa, on a farm east of Defiance to Clara (Eckerman) and Theodore Kenkel. Therese attended country school and later graduated from St. Paul’s Catholic High School of Defiance in 1946. After graduation, Therese taught country school for a few years.
She was united in marriage to Austin Joseph Scheuring on December 28, 1950, at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Together they farmed two miles west of Defiance. Six children were born to this union: Richard, Suzanne, Joseph, Yvonne, Steven, and Louis. The majority of Therese’s life was as a homemaker helping on the family farm, gardening, canning, and providing for her family. Austin passed away on October 20, 1983.
Therese continued living on the farm following her husband’s death. A few years later, she met a special friend, Johnnie Erlbacher. Together they enjoyed each other’s company. In September 2012, her health required her to move to the Manilla Manor nursing home.
Therese’s hobbies included sewing, crocheting, embroidering, knitting, making quilts, baking, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Many people are the recipients of Therese’s talents in the form of a homemade gift, a beautiful quilt, or with lessons on how to crochet, knit, or sew quilts. Therese also enjoyed countless hours of playing cards, especially when she won.
Therese died on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-six years, ten months, and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Austin, brother Mark Kenkel, and sisters: Marie Bueltel, Velma Pedersen, Clarice Hansen, son-in-law, Murray Lichliter and special friend, Johnnie Erlbacher.
She is survived by her children: Richard Scheuring and his wife Gail of Denison, Iowa, Suzanne and her husband Joseph Caldwell of Fancy Gap, Virginia, Joseph Scheuring and his wife Cindy of Defiance, Iowa, Yvonne and her husband Larry Gaul of Earling, Iowa, Steven Scheuring and his wife Jeanie of Defiance, and Louis Scheuring and his wife Lisa also of Defiance; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; brothers: Ray Kenkel, Theodore Kenkel and his wife Judy and Joseph Kenkel and his wife Alice; sisters: Leona and her husband Joe Moran and JoAnn Kuehnhold; brother-in-law Fred Hansen; sister-in-law Genevieve Scheuring; many other family members and friends.
