Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Pfannebecker Funeral Home, Denison, IowaVisitation: From 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Pfannebecker Funeral Home, Denison, IowaBurial: Dow City Cemetery, Dow City, Iowa Thomas Wendell Hodkin was born October 10, 1926, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Thomas Boston and Bertha Amanda Larson Hodkin.  He was raised on the farm north of Dow City, Iowa, receiving his early education in the rural schools before graduating from the Dow City High School.  He served his country in United States Army in Korea until his honorable discharge. After returning home from the service, Tom and his mother Bertha moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he worked for Earl May Greenhouse and Westlake Hardware in Omaha for a few years.  He then went to work for Producers Livestock, yarding cattle at the Omaha Stockyards where he was employed until an accident at work forced him to retire. Following his retirement Tom took care of his mother Bertha until her death at the age of 97.  He enjoyed reading and exploring new restaurants in the Omaha area.  Tom also took care of many elderly neighbors in Council Bluffs until 2007 when he moved to the Reed House in Denison, Iowa.  Tom loved living at the Reed House where he was the “Character” that everyone enjoyed.  Due to failing health he had recently entered the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap, Iowa.  Tom was never married but was always a part of the family.  The Houston family always treated Tom as one of theirs as well. Tom died early Monday, December 8, 2014, at the Crawford County Memorial in Denison, Iowa, with his niece and nephew at his side.  At the time of his death he had been blessed with 88 years, 1 month and 28 days.Tom was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Bertha Hodkin and one brother Otis Calvin Hodkin and his wife Betty Jean (Houston) Hodkin.Those remaining to cherish his memory include one niece and one nephew and their spouses: Hope and Bill Truitt of Dow City, Iowa, and Tom and Wendy Hodkin of Bingham Lake, Minnesota, many great and great great nieces and nephews and cousins.Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 11, 2014, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home, Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service was provided by EveVonne Muff asm soloist and organist, singing “How Great Thou Art” and “In the Garden”. Pallbearers included Travis Hodkin, Thomas O. Hodkin, Mike Fallia, Eric Truitt, Lucas Truitt and Pat Helwig. Interment, with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 444, Dow City, Iowa, was at the Dow City Cemetery, Dow City, Iowa. Following the services all were invited to join the family at the Brasel Building for fellowship and a catered meal by Deb’s Catering.
