Thomas Elmer Tremmel was born on December 5, 1950 to Edwin and Dorothy (Kuiper) Tremmel in Sheldon, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon. He attended grade school at St. Patrick’s Catholic School, graduated from Sheldon High School and continued on to Mankato State University and the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy where he obtained his pharmacy degree.
Tom was united in marriage to Kathleen Ann Johnston on August 11, 1972 at Assumption Catholic Church in Richfield, Minnesota. They became parents to three children: Matthew, Elizabeth, and Emma.
The family settled in Harlan, Iowa, where Tom owned and operated Pexton Drug Store for several years before becoming the pharmacist at Myrtue Memorial Hospital.
After his retirement in 2012, Tom was able to spend more time enjoying his hobbies. He loved to go fishing, listen to music, do crossword puzzles, eat black licorice, and read. His favorite thing to do was to take care of his grandchildren whenever they came to visit.
Tom died on Sunday, August 17, 2014 having attained the age of sixty-three years, eight months, and twelve days. He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Kathy Tremmel of Harlan, Iowa; son Matthew Tremmel and his wife, Jessica of Alexandria, Virginia; daughters Elizabeth and her husband Brad Schonhorst of Montgomery Village, Maryland and Emma Tremmel of Hartford, Connecticut; three grandchildren: Claire and Edwin Schonhorst and Matthew Tremmel; mother Dorothy Tremmel of LeMars, Iowa; brothers: John Tremmel and his wife Mona of Sioux City, Iowa, Jim Tremmel and his wife Pat of Milford, Nebraska, Mike Tremmel of Portland, Oregon, Joe Tremmel of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Chuck Tremmel of Plainview, Nebraska; sister Mary Toel and her husband Jay of LeMars, Iowa; other family members, and friends.
