Tim Dunlevy was born in Council Bluffs on April 30, 1938, to parents John and Lettie Dunlevy. Tim grew up in Avoca and was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he was baptized and confirmed.
Born into a family of avid Iowa Hawkeye fans, Tim embraced the tradition, cheering the teams’ victories and loyally enduring their defeats. And while the Hawks were his favorite, he loved following sports of all kinds; he rejoiced when the Chicago Cubbies finally won a World Series title, he was glued to the set during every Olympics, and he was a lifelong fan of AHSTW sports teams. Tim was often so eager to get to games, he’d walk to the school before his family arrived to pick him up, and in his later years, he always tuned in to radio coverage to follow the Vikes in action.
Growing up and living his entire life in Avoca, Tim knew many members of the community well. When Avocans he knew experienced successes or received good news, he was glad for them, and when they had bad news, he was truly sad, and prayed for them. Tim loved his class reunions, most recently his 60th, eagerly anticipating them and talking about them for months afterward.
More than anything else, Tim truly loved his family. When his sister Mary’s children were in elementary school, they often walked over to Tim’s after school, where he would read and play games with them while they waited for their mom or dad to pick them up and head home. He loved attending all of their activities as they grew, and when they had kids of their own, he relished attending his great-nieces’ swim lessons, Christmas concerts and other school events. He loved family trips to Lake Okoboji, where he was surrounded by family.
Tim passed away at home in the care of his loving sister on Sunday, February 11, 2018. He attained the age of seventy nine years, nine months, and twelve days. Tim is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lettie Lue Ross; his brother, John Dunlevy; his brother-in-law, Mike Ross; his nephews, Daniel and Matthew Ross; and his niece, Kate Ross.
