Todd Randall “Randy” Kay, age 57, was born on October 4, 1959, at the Rhein Main Air Force Base Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. He passed away after a short illness at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska on January 23, 2017.
Randy was eighteen months old when the family returned to the United States after being discharged from the military and returned to their hometown of Harlan, Iowa. Randy graduated from Harlan High School in 1978. After school, he moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and worked as an automotive mechanic. In 1985, he moved to Dubuque, Iowa, and continued to work as a mechanic until 1977, when he then became a cross country truck driver, a job he loved.
In 1995, he married Michelle Friesinger of Dubuque, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, a son Russell James Allen Kay in 1997 and a daughter Melyssa LuRose Kay in 1998. In 2007, Randy and his family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he accepted a position with a Hydraulic company in Omaha, Nebraska, and was still employed there at the time of his death. Randy was an avid late-model dirt track racing fan and he and his fiancee, Rhonda, traveled to many tracks in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas, from March to November every year.
Randy was preceded in death by his wife Michelle on January 2012; grandparents, Henry and Clarice Peterson of Harlan, Iowa; grandparents Vernon and Alice Petersen of Harlan; stepfather Clay Sanders of El Dorado Springs, MO, who Randy said was his mentor.
He is survived by his mother Judy and step-father Leslie Knight of El Dorado Springs; MO father, Leonard Kay and stepmother Celine Kay of Iowa; son Russell Kay of Omaha, NE; daughter Melyssa Kay of Omaha; step-sisters Elizabeth and Maria of Iowa; fiancee Rhonda Griffeth of Council Bluffs, IA; father-in-law Mick Friesinger and mother-in-law Sandy Friesinger of Dubuque, IA; aunts and uncles Hugh and Dee O’Grady of Omaha and Jim and Monna Juhl of Shelby, IA; cousin and best friend Jerry Juhl of Persia, IA; many cousins and friends.
Randy was a very kind, thoughtful and loving person and will be missed by his many friends and family. He left us much too soon.
