Troy Gerard Smith, son of Garry Smith and Thelma (Schwarte) Nelson, was born December 12, 1970 in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan and attended St. Michael's Catholic Grade School. He then attended Harlan Junior High and Harlan Community High School, graduating with the class of 1989.
After high school, Troy worked at Ahrenholtz Construction for many years. He also helped his dad at Earl May in Harlan then at Garry's Garden Center. Troy then worked at Agriland FS and also worked for Rob Arkfeld on his farm.
In 2000, Troy was united in marriage to Amber Lynn Scheffler at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Together they welcomed a daughter, Karissa, into their lives.
Troy enjoyed riding and working on his motorcycle. He was a free spirit at heart and riding down the road with his buddies on his chopper was one of his favorite passions. He also liked to help out his buddy Jeff Stephens on his #92 race car. But his first love was when he became a father and grandfather. "His girls" were the lights of his life. During the last few months of Troy's life, he shared some very memorable times with his fiancée Amy Jo.
He died surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, August 2, 2018 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, attaining the age of forty-seven years, seven months and twenty-one days. He was preceded in death by his father Garry Smith and brother Trent Smith.
He has left to cherish his memory, his daughter Karissa Smith and granddaughter Hadleigh Marie Bechtol of Harlan, Iowa; mother Thelma Nelson of Harlan; siblings Tim Smith of Blair, Nebraska; Todd Smith and his wife Shireen of Omaha, Nebraska; Traci Smith and her significant other Mark Haynes of Harlan; fiancée Amy Jo Meurer of Avoca, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members; many "biker brothers" and several friends.
