Urban Bernard Henscheid Profile Photo
Urban (Urbie) Bernard Henscheid was born November 2, 1927 in Westphalia, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Marie (Mueller) Henscheid, his wife Therese M. (Lickteig) Henscheid, brothers Jeron and Virgil, and sisters Verena, Marie, Sally and Iona. He has one surviving sister - Jane (Henscheid), married to Leo Rau.
He married the love of his life, Therese, on December 30, 1952, and started farming his father-in-law's land for the next sixty years. A lot can be said about Urbie, but no one can ever say that he didn't work hard. He was up at the crack of dawn and didn't stop until late in the evening, when he enjoyed a cold Hamm's beer (or two)! He struggled with hearing loss since age 16 and loved to read until he was robbed of most of his eye-sight several years ago. German Heritage was important to him as his grand-parents immigrated from Germany, he was able to speak the language. He traveled to Germany with his son Jim, visiting the birthplace of three of his four grandparents.
Urbie loved to work with his hands and tools. He spent many hours and days working with his father doing carpentry. His new found passion after retirement was helping to refurbish the St. Boniface steeple.
Urbie was a devout Catholic and prayed the rosary daily, sometimes more than once. He never missed a chance to recruit new parish members.
He had an outstanding memory. He loved to tell stories from his childhood and growing up in Westphalia. Urbie could make you laugh or smile when you least expected it. He will be remembered having a sweet smile and a twinkle in his eyes.
Most of his life was lived on the farm outside Westphalia where he raised four children - Jeron (Melissa) Henscheid of Harlan, Jim (Joan) Henscheid of Clive, John (Janet) Henscheid of Westphalia, and Joyce (Dennis) Mumm of Harlan. There are fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren (and counting)! Urbie was a devoted husband, father, and Catholic gentleman, and loved to help raise the grandkids!
