Ursula Theresa Bruck, daughter of Zeno P. And Viola T. (Schwery) Leinen, was born on March 9, 1932 in Portsmouth, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School with the class of 1950. After high school, Ursula attended nurses training classes.
On January 12, 1954, Ursula was united in marriage to Michael John Bruck at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth. They made their home on a farm outside of Portsmouth where they raised their twelve children: Theresa, James, Debra, John, Francis, Sharon, Lorraine, Joseph, Jeffrey, Jay, Jacqueline and Cristie. While on the farm, Ursula loved tending to her flowers and garden, canning fruits and vegetables.
After her kids grew up, Urusla took a job with the Harlan Community Schools where she was a cook for a number of years until her retirement. She was a hard worker and also spent many years as an unpaid volunteer running the concession stand at the Portsmouth Ball Park. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who delighted in attending the school and athletic events of her children and grandchildren for many years. She was an avid collector of everything from sea shells to antiqued glassware.
Ursula died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan on Sunday, May 28, 2017 having attained the age of eighty-five years, two months and nineteen days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Mike, children Francis and Lorraine and siblings Harvey Leinen, Verlee Leinen and Linda Daoust.
She is survived by her children: Theresa and her husband Wayne Corrin of Neola, Iowa; James Bruck and his wife Julie of Harlan; Debra and her husband Ken Leinen of Portsmouth; John Bruck and his wife Janet of Portsmouth; Sharon and her husband Allen Embree of Oakland, Iowa; Joseph Bruck and his wife Robin of La Vista, Nebraska; Jeffrey Bruck and his wife Dianne of Denison, Iowa; Jay Bruck of Atlantic, Iowa; Jacqueline and her husband Gary Schaben of Portsmouth and Cristie and her husband Roger Kenkel of Earling, IA; 28 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; siblings: Jim Leinen and his wife Dorothy of Denison; Orville Leinen and his wife Kathleen of Panora, Iowa; Eunice Blum with Gil Loeffler of Panama, Iowa; Mildred and her husband Jerry Brus of Denison; and Zita and her husband Gaylen Smith of Portsmouth; sisters-in-law Clara “Muse” Carroll of Harlan; Helen Bruck of Harlan; Charlotte Leinen of Harlan; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
