Velma Marie Margurete Lindstrom was born in rural Ida County on October 4, 1921 to Marvin and Caroline (Kahl) Hollander. She was baptized and confirmed at Friedens Evangelical & Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Velma received her education in rural school Hayes #8 in Ida County. After 8th grade graduation she helped her parents on their farm in Ida County. She often referred to herself as her dad’s “hired man”. On March 28, 1941 she married Don Lindstrom at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived around rural Kiron until Don was drafted into the Armed Services, serving 2+ years in the Air Force. During this time Velma (with 2 small children) lived with Don’s sister Vivian, and her small child in Kiron. Upon Don’s return from the service, they purchased a service station that they operated for 35 years. They eventually expanded, adding a repair shop, tank wagon service and car dealership. Velma handled the bookwork for the businesses as well as raising their three children, Jerry, Pat and Jim. Don and Velma spent most of their lives living in Kiron, supporting the community. They did a lot of traveling during their retirement years. Velma was active in many different organizations: the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, White Cross and Women’s Missionary Society at First Baptist Church, St. John’s Bible Study, Red Hat Society, Sewing/Quilting Group, TOPS, Coffee Club and serving on the Election Board. She enjoyed playing cards with her Rummy Royal group and the Friday Date Night suppers at the café in Kiron. Visiting and traveling with her children and grandchildren was a great form of entertainment and she was always on the go, putting lots of miles on her Buick. Doing hand embroidery work and quilting alone or with friends produced many lovely keepsakes. Velma passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, IA. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 91 years, 6 months and 21 days. Preceding her in death were her husband Donald Lindstrom, siblings Milda Hollander, Virtus Hollander, Vera Baker and Verna Johnston, and grandson Parker Getter.
