Vera Pearl Meves was born on January 18, 1914 to John and Mable (Conrad) Meves near Shelby, Iowa. She attended country school before graduating from Harlan High School. She continued her education at AIB in Des Moines, Iowa studying various secretarial skills.
In 1942, Vera began her long employment with International Harvester in Chicago, Illinois. Vera never married, but was able to travel the world with a travel group through International Harvester (IH), visiting Asia, Europe, and other Far East countries.
She volunteered her time at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago and at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago where she was a member for many years.
Vera died peacefully at her own home in Chicago on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, having attained the age of ninety-eight years, two months, and two days. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mable Meves and is survived by cousins, other family members, her church family, and friends.
Pastor Donna Ewert officiated at the 2:00 PM graveside service held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa.
