Verena Catherine Schomers, daughter of Joseph and Marie(Mueller) Henscheid, was born on June 3, 1922, in Muenster, Texas, as the first of eight children and moved to Westphalia, Iowa a year later. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School in 1939.
On October 5, 1949, Verena was united in marriage to Cyril Joseph Schomers at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Three children were born to this union: Michael Mathias, Mary Margaret, and Marilyn Kay.
Cyril and Verena made their home on the family farm outside of Westphalia. During that time they were very active members of the church and community. In 1977 our dear Lord called Cyril home. Verena and the children finished the construction of their lovely home in Westphalia where Verena lived for the next thirty-one years.
Verena thoroughly enjoyed her family, relatives, and many friends. She spent much time in prayer, hand embroidered hundreds of baby quilts and pillows, made doll quilts and pillows, quilted with the Sewing Circle ladies, enjoyed playing piano by ear and also enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, Scrabble, Jumble puzzles, the Omaha World Herald and Catholic Digest. She also loved her geraniums, impatiens and mini-garden.
In September 2008, Verena became a resident of the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa. It was there she died on Friday, February 20, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-six years, eight months and seventeen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Cyril; and her brothers Jeron and Virgil.
She is survived by her children: Michael Schomers of Westphalia; Mary and her husband Jim Tomky of Amherst, Colorado; and Marilyn and her husband Denny Grote of Dunlap, Iowa; her grandchildren: Thomas, Theresa, and Timothy Grote of Dunlap; her brother Urban Henscheid and his wife Therese of Westphalia; her sisters: Marie and her husband Tom Case of Charter Oak, Iowa; Sally and her husband Roman Leuschen of Westphalia, Iowa; Jane and her husband Leo Rau of Omaha, Nebraska; and Iona Smith of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her sister-in-law Theresa Henscheid of Westphalia; her brother-in-law John Wageman of Earling, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, February 23, 2009, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 10:30 AM service and Deacon Marvin Klein concelebrated. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia with Pat Smith, Bev Schulte, Jane Grote, Bill Schomers, Ron Schomers, Joyce Clay, Joyce Mumm, and Ed Henscheid acting as casket bearers.
