Vernon Alvin Buschkamp was born on February 27, 1927 to Gerhard and Louise (Hendricks) Buschkamp on a farm near Bloomfield, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Bloomfield.

He graduated from Bloomfield High School with the Class of 1945. On February 3, 1948, Vernon entered into the United States Navy. He received an honorable discharge in June of that same year.

He returned home where he farmed until 1953 when he began attending Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. He taught school in Hartington, Nebraska and in Guam. He held a variety of jobs including dairy farms in Antioch, Illinois, Salina, Kansas, and New York; as a mechanic at Wigness Machine Shop in Harlan, Iowa; Gaughn Motors in Denison, Iowa; as janitorial staff at Bluffs Run Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa; and continued to help on farms in the area.

He had three adopted children: Tomi, Traci, and Tamara. Vernon was a licensed pilot and a civilian member of the National Police and Trooper Association as well as the National Flying Educators Association. He was able to travel to Rome to see the Pope.

Vernon was a resident of Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa when he died on Friday, February 22, 2013, having attained the age of eighty-five years, eleven months, and twenty-six days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Darrell, Donald, and Dennis; and his sisters Alice and Velma.

He is survived by Tomi, Traci, and Tamara and grandchildren; sister Fern Schafer of Yankton, South Dakota, and brother-in-law Gerald Bruck of Earling, Iowa; other family members and friends.
