Vernon Campbell, son of Ralph and Irene (Frank) Campbell, was born February 7, 1937 on a farm west of Irwin. He was baptized and confirmed at Irwin United Methodist Church. He attended Irwin High School, where he graduated with the class of 1954.
On February 19, 1956, Vernon was united in marriage to Nora May Holloway at Irwin United Methodist Church. Three daughters were born to this union: Debra Jean, Dianne Marie and Denise Ilene. Vernon farmed outside of Irwin for many years and also drove grain truck.
He was very active in his church and community, where he served on many boards. Vernon received a Life Membership Pin and Citizen of the Year along with his brothers Norman and Lyle. He served as a member of Eastern Star, Masonic Sardius Lodge No. 44, A.F. and A.M., The Shriners and the Irwin Fire Department each for 50 years.
Vernon loved fishing, working in his garden, tending to the flowers and his yard. He also loved woodworking, many items he would make for his family which included anything from frames to cedar chest, gun cabinets, entertainment centers and hutches.
Vernon died on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty years, ten months and twenty days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant brother Donald, brother-in-law Darrell Johnson.
He has left to cherish his memory, his wife of 61 years Nora May Campbell of Irwin, Iowa; daughters Debra and her husband Robert McLaughlin of Shelby, Iowa; Dianne and her husband James Buman of Harlan, Iowa; Denise and her husband Robert Wiig of Irwin, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Keri (Mark) Smith, Cathy (Chris) Hoffmann, Kristi (fiancé Jerry) Buman, Amber (Kevin) Dankert, Adam (Amy) McLaughlin, Zachary Wiig, 9 great grandchildren: Kassidy Smith, William, Steven and Faith Stangl, Alexa and Kalyn Dankert, Cooper and Caitlin Hoffmann, Tierney McLaughlin; siblings Norman Campbell and his wife Donna of Irwin; Lois Johnson of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Lyle Campbell and his wife Gloria of Irwin; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
