Vernon Fredrick Hinz, son of Fredrick and Claudina (Wolff) Hinz, was born on September 11, 1931 in Avoca, Iowa. He attended Avoca Schools and graduated with the class of 1951. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for 4 years and then transferred to the reserves for 4 years. Vernon attended Parks Air College and met his future wife, Kathryn Osterloh in St. Louis. The two were united in marriage at The Carondelet Evangelical and Reformed Church in St Louis, Missouri. To this union 5 children were born: Adrian, Ronald, Julia, Elizabeth and Paul.
Vernon was a masterful woodworker making hundreds of items often from wood he had cut from his own trees. He also loved to fish and found every fishing opportunity he could with friends and family. He was an enthusiastic church volunteer serving as property manager at a couple of different church homes. He farmed for several years until 1962 and then worked for McDonald Aircraft building fighter planes and flight simulators until returning to the family farm and beginning his own business as an electrician.

Vernon passed away on Monday, May 13, 2024, at Hillcrest Health and Rehab having attained the age of 92 years, 8 months and 2 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy, wife Kathryn, infant son Ronald, and infant great-grandsons Oliver and Henry.

Left to cherish the memories are his children Adrian (Camille) Hinz of Omaha, Nebraska; Julia (Tom) Glissmann of Ankeny, Iowa; Elizabeth (Lon) Miller of Ashland, Nebraska; Paul (Deborah) Hinz of Windermere, Florida; 8 grandchildren: Kristen (Brandin) Kuklinski of Waukee, Iowa; Daniel Hinz of Lincoln, Nebraska; Derek Glissmann of Ankeny, Iowa; Dillon (Amy) Glissmann of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Aaron (Michelle) Miller of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; Laura (Jeffrey) Miller-Morlend of Wellesley, MA; Jonathan (Christine) Miller of Denton, NE; Michael (Hannah) Hinz of Orlando, Florida; 7 great-grandchildren: Nelliene, Damon Bastion, Elainey, Madsen, Rowen and Lennin; other family and many friends.
