Vernon K. Holdsworth
December 17, 1923 — July 20, 2018
Vernon Holdsworth, son of Ray and Elsie (Wiese) Holdsworth, was born on December 17, 1923 in Carroll, Iowa. He was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Carroll on July 3, 1927 and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Irwin on December 15, 1957. He attended school in Manilla until 6th grade when he started to help his dad with farming.
In March of 1944 he joined the United States Army, serving during WWII and returning home with a medical discharge in October of 1945. After his discharge, Vernon worked as an auto mechanic for five years, farmed for Christoffersen for five years and then started farming on his own.
On September 4, 1946 Vernon was united in marriage to Della Sheer at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. To this union, eight children were born: Linda, Don, Connie,Tom, Colleen, Becky, Carol and Kenneth. Vernon, Della and their children did a lot of traveling throughout the years.
They farmed for about twenty-five years near Irwin and Manilla. Vernon drove a school bus for the Irwin School and worked for Robinson Implement in Irwin. They moved to Perry, Iowa where they owned and operated the D&D Motel. Vernon also drove truck for Rosene Implement for nine years. When they moved to Boone, Iowa Vernon drove the Boone County Transportation Bus for pre-school and did maintenance work at the senior citizen apartments. Their final destination was Harlan, Iowa where Vernon drove a bus for handicapped children for four years and was the courier for the United Bank of Iowa before his retirement on October 20, 2012.
Vernon always enjoyed going fishing, listening to polka music, new or old cars (especially old cars) but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. They were a very important part of his life, along with his faith.
Vernon passed away on Friday, July 20, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan attaining the age of ninety-four years, seven months and three days. In addition to his parents, Vernon is preceded in death by his son Kenneth Holdsworth, son-in-law Randy Swenson, siblings Merle Holdsworth and his wife Opal and Betty and her husband Les Boyens; brother-in-law Gilburt Mundt and great grand daughter Sydney Carpenter.
Left to cherish his memory, his wife of 71 years Della Holdsworth of Harlan, Iowa; children Linda and her husband Alan Kuhlmann of Charter Oak, Iowa; Don Holdsworth and his wife Pat of Harlan, Iowa; Connie and her husband Jerry Ahrenholtz of Defiance, Iowa; Tom Holdsworth and his wife Julie of Oak Grove, Missouri; Colleen and her husband Roger Andersen of Harlan, Iowa; Becky and her husband Denny DeWild of Shenandoah, Iowa; Carol and her husband Tim Whittaker of Letts, Iowa; 25 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister Virginia Mundt of Manilla, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.
