Vernon Lyle Nielsen, son of Walter and Mina (Stofferson) Nielsen, was born on his family's farm 7 miles northeast of Avoca, Iowa on January 9, 1926 in rural Shelby, County, Iowa. He attended country school at Fairview Township and graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1943.
On April 14, 1950, Vernon was united in marriage to Inez Irene Pond at the Congregational Church in Avoca, Iowa. Two daughters were born to this union: Sharon and April. Shortly after their marriage, Vernon and Inez made their home in Riverton, Wyoming and relocated several times because of Vernon's road construction jobs. They moved back to Iowa in 1954, living in Harlan and Cherokee before resettling in Avoca in 1956.
Vernon worked a variety of jobs in the surrounding communities including selling vehicles for the Baller's Ford dealership in Oakland, Iowa. He then worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation garage in Avoca until his retirement. He was a longtime member of the United Church of Avoca and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and helping as needed.
After retiring Vernon was regularly seen at Madden Akers Auto Repair Shop in Avoca sharing coffee, stories and helping as needed.
Vernon died on January 27, 2015 at Alegent Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of eighty nine years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Sharon, wife Inez and brother Eugene. He is survived by his daughter April Nielsen and her husband Tom Bauch of Chetek, Wisconsin; two grandchildren: Angelene Mitra and Jacob Bauch; his brother Richard Nielsen and wife Rita of Treynor, Iowa; his sister Doris Myers of Talent, Oregon; and sister-in-law Margaret Nielsen of Harlan, Iowa, nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
A Memorial Service will be held in May 2015 at the United Church of Avoca. The date will be published later.
