Vernon Harold Reis was born at Woodbine, Iowa, September 20, 1934, the son of Henry Elton and Gladys Hardy Reis. He was raised in the Harrison and Crawford County areas receiving his education in the rural schools before completing his G.E.D. after moving to Denison when he was 15 years old. On February 2, 1957, Vernon was united in marriage with Darlene Swanson at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison and their union was blessed with six children: Kimberly, Kevin, Kathleen, Kristie, Kelly and Kary. On February 11, 1957, nine days after his marriage, Vernon entered the United States Army serving his country for two years as a Military Policeman until his Honorable Discharge February 10, 1959. Following his discharge he returned to Denison where they resided until moving to their present farm acreage south of Denison in 1963. During his working career he was employed at White Star Dairy from 1959 until 1967, Orkin Pest Control for seven years, Farm Service Coop and at Farmland from 1976 until his retirement in 1997. During his leisure time, Vernon enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, reading, gardening, playing cards and trips to Okoboji with family and friends. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Vernon died early Sunday, June 9, 2013, at his home in rural Denison where he had lovingly been cared for by Darlene. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 78 years Vernon was preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Gladys Reis; one brother: Merlyn Reis and three sisters: Beulah Crane, Leoda Blunk and Lamone Reis in infancy. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of over 56 years, Darlene Reis of Denison; 6 children: Kimberly, and husband Kevin Nulle of Ida Grove, Iowa, Kevin Reis of Denison, Iowa and special friend Elfrieda Waldemar , Kathleen Wolterman of Denison, Iowa, Kristie and husband Brad Fredrichs of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Kelly and wife RaeAnn Reis of Webster City, Iowa and Kary Reis of Ida Grove, Iowa; 31 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; brothers: Leonard Reis and Gale and wife Carol Reis all of Denison, Iowa; other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa, with Father Paul Kelly as Celebrant. Others participating in the mass included Servers: Brandon Fredrichs and Lila and Patrisha Wolterman; Lector: Kristie Fredrichs; Gift Bearers: Kaleb, Keegan and Kayne Reis and Eucharistic Ministers: Judy Brodersen, Carolyn VonTersch and Tudy Bretey. Music for the Mass was provided by St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing “Here I Am Lord”, “Amazing Grace”, “On Eagle’s Wings” and “Be Not Afraid” with Jean Cornelius, accompanist. Pallbearers included Matt Nulle, Tom Grap, Josh Wolterman, Todd Reis, Chris Reis and Luke Reis. Military Honors were provided the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Following the interment all were invited to join the family at the Parish Center for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. A visitation was held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where a Rosary was prayed at 4:00 p.m. and a Parish Vigil Service held at 6:00 p.m. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home, www.pfannebecker.com , Denison, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
