Vernon Charles Scheuring was born on July 1, 1920, to Joseph and Suzanna (Mumm) Scheuring on the family farm near Defiance, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Columbia Catholic Church and confirmed at St. Peter�s Catholic Church in Defiance. He attended Union Township School for two years before going to St. Paul�s Catholic School in Defiance. He graduated with the Class of 1939 from St. Paul�s.
Vernon enlisted in the United States Army in October of 1941. He served in the 250th Coast Artillery of the Alaska Defense Command in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands. He also served in the 789 Coast Artillery stationed in the Phillipines. He was honorably discharged on November 29, 1945.
On February 10, 1948, Vernon was united in marriage to Miss Genevieve Gaul at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: Jim, Alice, Chuck, Kathy, Jane, and Dale.
He farmed for over fifty years and raised cattle and hogs. He held many positions in St. Peter�s Church including eucharistic minister, parish council, finance council, and church choir. He also served on the school board and was a 4-H leader for twenty years.
Vernon enjoyed farming with his Minneapolis Moline tractors and farm machinery and driving Oldsmobile cars all of his life.
He retired in 1985 and lived on the family farm until recently when he went to Elm Crest Retirement Home where he died on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, having attained the age of ninety-one years and nineteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters: Cecelia, Valentine, Carmen, Marcella, and Austin.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years Genevieve Scheuring of Defiance, Iowa; children: Jim Scheuring and his wife Cindy of Defiance, Alice and her husband Jim Huber of Omaha, Nebraska, Chuck Scheuring and his wife Darla of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Kathy and her husband Mike King of Freeland, Michigan, Jane Scheuring of Fremont, Nebraska, and Dale Scheuring and his wife Lisa of Defiance; nineteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at St. Peter�s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were James Scheuring, Jr., Kevin King, Brandon V. Scheuring, Ben Scheuring, Owen King, Greg Huber, James Flynn, and Matt Scheuring. Military Rites were conducted by American Legion Post No. 707 at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance.
