Victor Joseph Finken “Vic” was born on December 27, 1925 to Nick and Anna (Bieker) Finken in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed and received twelve years of education at St. Joseph’s Catholic School where he graduated with the Class of 1943.

He enlisted in the United States Army in February of 1944 and received an honorable medical discharge on February 17, 1946 after being held as a prisoner of war. He was stationed at PW Camp in Ogden, Utah where he met his wife DeJoy Ogden who was also employed there by the Federal Government Supply Depot as a secretary and key punch operator. They were married on August 8, 1945. To this union there were twelve children born: Judy, Shirley, Gerry, Duane, Kay, Diane, Ruth, Deb, Audrey, Keith, Patti, and Beverly.

Upon his medical discharge from the Army, he worked for one year in Sioux City, Iowa, returned to Ogden, Utah for one year, and then returned to Iowa and worked for Altmann Hybrid Seed Corn for eleven years. He received the appointment of rural carrier in 1959 and held this position with the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1981.

Vic was a member of the Earling Volunteer Fire Department, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1741, and the American Legion Post No. 615.

He became a resident of Little Flower Haven which is where he died on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 having attained the age of eighty-eight years, six months, and five days. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters Beverly and Patti, son Gerry, sister Elsie Assmann, and six brothers: Larry, Walt, Marcus, Albert “Rusty”, Raymond, and Francis.

Vic is survived by his wife of nearly sixty-nine years DeJoy Finken of Earling, Iowa; children: Judy Buckley of Earling, Iowa, Shirley Leonard and her special friend Duane Tigges of West Des Moines, Iowa, Duane Finken and his wife Marti of Earling, Iowa, Kay and her husband Dave Kurcz of Papillion, Nebraska, Diane and her husband James Dunham of Placentia, California, Ruth and her husband Larry Asbury of Pearcy, Arkansas, Debra and her husband Richard Hudkins of San Antonio, Texas, Audrey and her husband Steve Henscheid of Newton, Iowa, and Keith Finken and his wife Judy of Defiance, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; sisters Elvira Miller of Earling, Iowa and Mildred Retz of Hesperia, California; other family members and friends.
