Vincent Waltz
May 19, 1935 — September 8, 2007
Vincent Joseph Waltz was born on May 19, 1935, to Leo and Cecelia (Goeser) Waltz in Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. He attended St. Mary�s High School and joined the United States Marine Corps on October 15, 1956. He achieved the rank of Corporal before his honorable discharge in September of 1958. Upon his return to Iowa, he entered Conception Abbey in Conception, Missouri, and later transferred to Mount Bernard�s Seminary and was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1966.
After being ordained, he was assigned to Assumption Church in Granger as an assistant pastor. The next year, he went to St. Michael�s in Harlan and then in 1968 to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa, where he stayed until 1974.
On June 4, 1975, Vincent was united in marriage to Mary "Do" Doyle in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple had three foster children: Jeremy, John, and Jason Wyatt. Vincent continued his ministry at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, Iowa, from 1983 to 1994. He was also on the pastoral staff at the Newton Correctional Facility in Newton, Iowa, and the Iowa Prison for Women at Mitchellville, Iowa.
Vincent�s hobbies were art and running. He loved to paint and did several still-life portraits. He was also a great potter, making clay pieces that he fired and painted himself. He participated in the U. S. National Senior Sports Classic and the Iowa Games, winning awards in running events during both competitions.
Vincent and Do moved to the Elm Crest Assisted Living housing in Harlan in December of 2005. It was there that he died on Saturday, September 8, 2007, having attained the age of seventy-two years, three months, and twenty days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Geraldine.
He is survived by his wife Do Waltz of Harlan; his foster children: Jeremy and John Wyatt, both of Grinnell, Iowa, and Jason Wyatt of Panama, Iowa; his brother Gerald Waltz and his wife Janice of Portsmouth, Iowa, nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, September 13, 2007, with celebrant Rev. Bob Schoemann officiating the 10:30 AM service at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were: Derek Schmitz, Matt Schmitz, Josh Schmitz, Jason Wyatt, Paul Waltz, and Tim Waltz. Interment was held at St. Mary�s Cemetery in Panama.
