Viola Marie Miller was born on April 1, 1910, to Charles and Mary (Phifer) Green near Persia, Iowa. For the first year and a half of her schooling, she went to the Stamp School three miles away from the farm. In March of 1918, her parents bought a farm on the north edge of Shelby, Iowa, and she completed her schooling at the Shelby School, graduating with the Class of 1929.
After her graduation, she worked at Fogartys Caf in Shelby until her marriage to William Miller on January 21, 1931, in Omaha, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union: Evelyn, Allan, and Vern.
Because she had been so active in 4-H during her junior and senior high school years, it was easy for Viola to become the leader of the 4-H girls at Shelby. She served the club for five years, dividing the club into two sections when it grew large enough. She also spent four years as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.
Viola loved flowers and raised many different kinds wherever they lived. She also enjoyed sewing and baking. She turned her hobby into a talent she shared with friends and family by baking and decorating wedding cakes, cookies, and fancy sandwiches for over fifteen years.
After Viola and Bill survived the Depression years, they had a goal of building a new house. That goal was realized in 1979 when they moved into their new home. Sadly, Bill passed away just three years later in 1982.
Viola lived there until she became a resident of the Avoca Nursing Home where she died on October 21, 2009, having attained the age of ninety-nine years, six months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, and her son Allan.
She is survived by her daughter Evelyn (Allan) Pflugshaupt of Longville, Minnesota; her son Vern Miller and his wife Jean of Coralville, Iowa; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law Lynette Miller of Harlan, Iowa, sister Elda Woodward of Basking Ridge, New Jersey; step-sister Mariann and her husband Bob Martens of Walnut, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Pastor Duane Anunson conducted the 11:00 AM funeral service on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Glenn Hipnar, David Andersen, Robert Andersen, Tom Rhiner, Richard Goshorn, and Vernon Bauer. Interment was held at the Shelby Cemetery.
