Viola Waddell
March 3, 1925 — July 14, 2012
Viola Bernice Waddell was born on March 3, 1925 to Clarence and Augusta (Jespersen) Peterson on a farm in Center Township near Harlan, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1942.
On June 25, 1950, Viola was united in marriage to Earl Waddell in Elk Horn, Iowa. Three children were born to them: Carolyn, Connie, and Bruce.
She worked as a legal secretary at a law firm and then became a housewife, staying home to raise the children and run the household.
Viola was a member of the Center Country Club and American Baptist Women�s Ministries of First Baptist Church. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, and quilting. She liked to tend to her garden and celebrate birthdays in the family. She had a wonderful sense of humor.
After Earl�s retirement in 1982, they stayed on the farm for a few years before moving into their home in Harlan. Viola stayed in their home after Earl�s death in 1996 before moving in to Elm Crest Retirement Home 2011. It was at Elm Crest that Viola died on Saturday, July 14, 2012, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, four months, and eleven days. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Myrtle Walker, Evelyn Fick, and Ruby Martin.
Viola is survived by her daughters Connie and her husband Wayne Ray of Harlan, Iowa and Carolyn and her husband Dean Finken of Atlantic, Iowa; son Bruce Waddell and his wife Brenda of Harlan, Iowa; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Pastor Dan Hawn officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Phil Finken, Mike Stillian, Chad Finken, Nyle Hay, and Lyle Walker, Jr. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
