Virgil Nicholas Nihsen was born on November 11, 1924 to Nicholas and Emma (Halm) Nihsen in Minden, Iowa. He attended Shelby and Country School for his elementary education and Minden Public High School, graduating with the Class of 1943.
After his graduation, Virgil was drafted into the United States Army and served from March 31, 1944 to June 4, 1946. He was a squad leader in northern France. He received an honorable discharge before returning home.
Virgil worked as a farm hand and hired laborer for several local farmers. He enjoyed music and dancing. He always watched the Lawrence Welk show and like to play cards with his friends.
He had lived in the senior citizens’ apartments in Minden before moving to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center on February 18, 2006.
This is where he died on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, having attained the age of eighty-six years, six months, and twenty-eight days. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brothers Allen and Dean, and his brother Kenneth.
Virgil is survived by his brothers Harold Nihsen and his wife Erma of Shelby, Iowa, Harley Nihsen and his wife Shirley of Minden, Paul Nihsen and his wife Judy of Minden, Grant Nihsen and his wife Lois of Crescent, Iowa, and Elden Nihsen and his wife Beth of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister-in-law LaVon Nihsen of Council Bluffs; cousins; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
Pastor Brian Wohlhuter officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Minden United Church of Christ in Minden, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Nick Nihsen and Gary Nihsen. Serving as casket bearers were Donald Nihsen, Robert Nihsen, Ronald Nihsen, John Nihsen, David Nihsen, and Rory Nihsen. Interment was held in the Minden Cemetery in Minden, Iowa.
