Virginia Lytle was born on May 29, 1916 to Perry and Ethel (Ross) Mayne in Harlan, Iowa. She grew up in the home her Grandfather Ross built in 1882. She attended Laurel Elementary School in Harlan and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1934.



Virginia taught country schools in both Polk and Center Townships for two years after her graduation.



On June 2, 1937, she was united in marriage to Wendell Lytle at her family home in Harlan. For the next twenty-four years, Virginia and Wendell lived and farmed on four different farms, all in Lincoln Township.



She enjoyed the country life and helping her husband on the farm. She was a 4-H Leader for several years and in 1948, had the honor of being named Shelby County Farm Bureau Women’s Homemaker of the Year.



In 1961, they moved to Lake City, Iowa, where she worked in Farley’s Fabric and Fashion store. They moved back to Harlan in 1980 where she became a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, the Priscilla Society, and the S S Club in Lincoln Township.



Virginia died on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-seven years, six months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of sixty-seven years, Wendell; two brothers: Gayther and Darrell Mayne; and a nephew William Mayne.



She is survived by her sister-in-law Vivian Lytle of Harlan, Iowa; niece Gail and her husband Roger Goodan of Downey, California; other family members and friends.



Pastor Donna Ewert officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Monday, December 23, 2013 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. Music was provided by accompanist Lisa Meyer, guitarist Chris Larsen, and vocalists Sherry Lytle, Michelle Bruck, Angie Trailer, Jana Lytle, and Molly Kieper. Serving as casket bearers were Jack Lytle, Robert Lytle, Mark Lytle, Gaige Lytle, Chris Larsen, and Jim Bruck. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
