Virginia Rasmussen
March 9, 1925 — October 10, 2011
Virginia Rasmussen was born on March 9, 1925 to Albert and Bernice (Sunderland) Larsen in Kirkman, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed into the Methodist Faith. She attended grade school at Polk Country School No. 9 and as a young girl, was a member of the Rainbow Girls in Harlan. Virginia graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1942.
After graduation, Virginia worked at Farners Variety Store in Harlan until her marriage to Lawrence Rasmussen on January 30, 1944. Five children were born to them: Connie, Susan, Larry, Jane, and Jerry.
The family lived on his parents� farm near Tennant, Iowa, until 1954, when they bought a farm southwest of Elk Horn, Iowa. Virginia raised the children and helped on the farm before becoming employed with the Elk Horn-Kimballton School District. She worked as a school cook for twenty-four years and enjoyed being with the children. She was a member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church for many years as well as a charter member of the Roebeck Happy Homemakers.
Virginia continued living on the farm after Lawrence�s death in 1987. She moved to Elk Horn in 1992 and in November of 2005, became a resident of Salem Lutheran Homes. While living there, she belonged to the Red Hot Peppers. It was at Salem that she died on Monday, October 10, 2011, having attained the age of eighty-six years, seven months, and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant brother, and sister Mae Verlee.
She is survived by her children: Connie and her husband Daryle Moeller of Elk Horn, Iowa, Susan Kite of Columbus, Ohio, Larry Rasmussen of Flatonia, Texas, Jane Hendrickson of Cypress, Texas, and Jerry Rasmussen and his wife Karel of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Pastor Keith Menter officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Devin Moeller, Darcey Hart, Michaele Baux, Chad Furne, Cassie Hendrickson, Cara Hendrickson, Braden Hendrickson, Zac Rasmussen, and Megan Rasmussen. Interment was held at the Elk Horn Cemetery.
