Virginia Lee Smyser
Virginia Lee was born to Lee Andrew and Ruth Gertrude (Smith) Porter on December 18, 1918 in Grant City, Missouri. She went to school in Grant City and graduated in 1936, and later went to Capital Beauty School in Omaha, Nebraska.
Virginia married Albert Grant Smyser on May 10, 1942 in Albany, Missouri. Albert and Virginia were blessed with five children: John “Jack”, Twyla, Sharon, Albert “Gene” and Randall. She operated a beauty salon until she began to raise her family and then she was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Church of Avoca in Avoca, Iowa and served as a Deacon.
Virginia owned race horses, enjoyed the slots and loved playing Bingo.
Virginia passed away at the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on March 20, 2016 in Avoca, Iowa having attained the age of ninety seven years, three months and two days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Albert, grandson Joel Lane Smyser and great grand-daughter Taylor Marie Teut; brothers Lowell Porter, Jim Porter, Adrian Porter, John Porter and sister Chastene Smyser.
Left to cherish Virginia’s memory are her children: John “Jack” Smyser and his wife Janet of Council Bluffs, IA; Twyla Ann Watson of Omaha, NE; Sharon and her husband Jerry Gross of Earling, IA; Albert “Gene” Smyser and his wife Darlene of Sioux City, IA; Randall Smyser and his wife Annette of Rock Port, MO; fifteen grandchildren; twenty seven great grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Barbara Porter of Missoula, MT and Betty (Charles) Thompson of Mesa, AZ; nephews, nieces and friends.
