Wallace Dean Pattee was born on June 13, 1931 to William and Alma (Rock) Pattee near Hancock, Iowa on the Rock Ranch. He attended country school in rural Hancock and graduated from Avoca High School with the Class of 1948.
After high school, Wallace worked as a hired man until he enlisted in the United States Army. He served with the Combat Engineers during the Korean War and received a Purple Heart upon his honorable discharge.
On March 24, 1953, Wallace was united in marriage to Shirley Niemann at Trinity Lutheran Church by Pastor Joseph Gerlt, who had also baptized and confirmed both of them. Wallace and Shirley were parents of five children: Susan, Virginia, Kathryn, Charles, and John.
Wallace began his farming career on 160 acres southwest of Avoca where they raised their family. He had a large cow-calf operation, hogs raised farrow to finish, and fed fat cattle. Wallace enjoyed riding his horse while checking cows in the pasture.
In addition to being a lifetime member of his church, he was a former Sunday School teacher and past president of the church council. He served on the FHA board, has been a member of the American Legion member since his Army discharge, and was president of the school board when the present Avoca High School was built.
Wallace enjoyed family gatherings, attending church, and spending time with friends at community events. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
Wallace died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-two years, eleven months, and twenty-one days. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Levern, Edward, and William (Swede) and brother-in-law Earl Davis and sister-in-law Helen Pattee.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years Shirley Pattee of Shelby, Iowa; daughters: Susan Peterson of Avoca, Iowa, Virginia and her husband Randy Lamp of Avoca, Iowa, and Kathryn Andersen and her husband Lee Legenhausen of Omaha, Nebraska; sons: Charles Pattee and his wife Penny of Avoca, Iowa and John Pattee and Lana Goettsch of Calamus, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; sister Arlene Davis of Hancock, Iowa; brothers Donald (Carol) Pattee of Avoca, Iowa and Lawrence (Lavina) Pattee of Big Lake, Minnesota; Sister-in-law Norma Pattee of Avoca, Iowa, and other family members and many friends.
