Warren Edward Grieb was born in Omaha, Nebraska on January 2nd, 1935, the son of Fred and Winifred (Hammond) Grieb. He was raised in Omaha graduating from South High School in 1952. He joined the Marine Corps in April of 1953 and served 14 months of active duty in South Korea. He was honorably discharged in April of 1956. On April 12th 1958 Warren was united in marriage to Mary Ann Gunia at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked with the Omaha Fire Department until purchasing Lucky Lanes Bowling Center in Denison, Iowa with his partner Thomas Brungardt in August of 1964, where he worked (and played) for 32years before retiring. Warren filled his retirement years traveling to see his children, fishing, hunting, bowling, reading, and working as an on call driver for the Denison Job Corps. He also was a volunteer driver for the Denison Veterans Administration van. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, The American Legion Post 8, and was a Lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2504. He was instrumental in establishing the Izaac Walton League in Denison. Over the years he was involved in many community activities including: coaching little league baseball, chaperoning FFA fishing trips, teaching gun safety courses, and introducing youth to bowling. Warren was an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be missed but not forgotten. Warren entered into the fullness of life December 21, 2013 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 78 years, 11 months and 19 days. Including his parents, Fred and Winifred Grieb, Warren was also preceded in death by his son Roger Grieb, brothers: Don, Howard and Robert Grieb, and sisters: Louise Olsson, Margaret Ludwig, and Doris Anglen. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann Grieb; children: Victoria Tarris and husband Steven, Barbara Arends and husband Mark, Terrance Grieb, Steven Grieb and wife Jennifer; daughter-in-law Wendy Grieb; 12 grandchildren; brother Fred Grieb; sister Carol Ciochon; other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with Father Paul Kelly serving as Celebrant. Others participating in the mass included Servers: Nick and Cory Miller, Lectors: Steven Grieb and David Tarries, Gift Bearers: Richard and Rosemary Gunia, Eucharistic Ministers: Larry and Becky Schwarte and Dorothy Leinen. Music for the Mass included a Prelude by Charlie Arends, and the St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing “Gather Us In”, “Be Not Afraid” “We Remember”, and “Though The Mountains May Fall” with Jean Cornelius serving as accompanist. Honorary Pallbearers were Gary Keesling, Jerome Riesselman, Jim Hillhouse, Merlin (Jake) Eck, Tom Brungardt, and Roger Kruse. Pallbearers were David Tarries, Andrew Tarries, Mitchell Arends, Charlie Arends, Carlie Grieb, Cory Grieb, Maxwell Grieb, and Bradley Grieb. Interment, with Military Honors, provided by the American Legion, Post 8, Denison, Iowa was at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery, Denison, Iowa with Taps played by Mitchell Arends. Following graveside rites and burial the family invited everyone to join them at the St. Rose Parish Center for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home, www.pfannebecker.com , Denison, Iowa was in charge of arrangements where on Friday, December 27, 2013 a Legion of Mary Rosary was prayed at 4:30 p.m., a Parish Vigil Service led by Father Paul Kelly was held at 5:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary was prayed at 7:00 p.m.
