Wayne E. Fiscus
January 15, 1921 — January 5, 2009
Wayne Edward Fiscus was born on January 15, 1921, to Paaren and Anna (Mitten) Fiscus in rural Shelby County. He attended Country School through the seventh grade and then begin working for neighboring farms at the age of fourteen.
He worked in the canning factory in Harlan at night for a number of years. He also followed the thrashing crews through the Dakotas and Minnesota. He actively started farming for himself in the Spring of 1942.
He was married to Violet Swensen on December 21, 1943, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union: Terry and Kelly. They farmed east of Kirkman until 1955, then farmed southeast of Harlan for two years before moving back to the Kirkman area in 1957.
In 1992, Wayne retired from farming and enjoyed the easy living of country life. He would go to the stock car races in Harlan and kept up the homeplace until May of 2008, when he and Violet moved into Harlan. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and had just celebrated sixty-five years of marriage to his lovely bride.
Wayne became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home on January 2, 2009, and it was there that he died on Monday, January 5, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, eleven months, and twenty-one days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Elmer, Iliff, Ivan, Melvin, Melvere, and Leonard and his sisters: Elvie Kolb, LaVern Nielsen, and Florence White.
He is survived by his wife Violet Fiscus of Harlan, Iowa; his sons Terry Fiscus and his wife Carol of Kirkman, Iowa and Kelly Fiscus and his wife Joleen also of Kirkman; five grandchildren: Lyn and her husband Troy Ahrenholtz, Dustin Fiscus and his wife Angie, Jeremy Fiscus and his wife Amy, Shilo and her husband Jeff Bladt, and Seth Fiscus; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other family members; and friends.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, with Pastor Keith Pals officiating the 2:00 PM service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Lyn Ahrenholtz, Shilo Bladt, Angie Fiscus, Amy Fiscus, Eugene Gaer, Ellsworth Shannon, Dale Baughman, Cal Peterson, and Ron Ronfeldt. Serving as casket bearers were Dustin Fiscus, Jeremy Fiscus, Seth Fiscus, Troy Ahrenholtz, Jeff Bladt, Keith Fiscus, Lyle Fiscus, and Randy Fiscus. Interment was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Kirkman, Iowa.
