Wayne Arlo Yates, the son of Richard and Ellen Hite Yates, was born on September 13, 1921 in Red Oak, Iowa. He graduated from Harlan High School in 1941. After graduation Wayne enlisted into the United States Army on October 7, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the European Theater from December 16, 1943 until his return to the States in July of 1945. He was Honorably discharged from the Army in September of 1945.
Wayne was united in marriage to Phyllis Krieger on June 15, 1947 in Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union one son Steven was born. Wayne worked as a type setter at the Journal Herald in Avoca for over twenty-five years. He enjoyed gardening, dominoes; especially growing tomatoes; building bird houses; baseball, horse racing and football. Wayne moved to Elm Crest in October 2007. He enjoyed visiting with his many friends.
Wayne died on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-six years, seven months and three days. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife (Phyllis) Elaine and his sister Delores Andersen.
Survivors include his son Steven and his wife Korla of Avoca, Iowa; two grandchildren: Kamie and her husband Kenny of Harlan and Mike and Erin of Avoca; four great grandchildren: Martin and Jessica; Adryan and Lauren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 18, 2008 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca with Pastor Jeff Erlemeier officiating. Military rites by Fred Funston Post #277 were held at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca. Those serving as casket bearers were Dan Rihner, Jeff Schoemann, David Rihner, Randy Smyser, Charlie Ronnfeldt and Wayne Martin.
