Wilfred Casper Weihs, son of Anton and Catherine (Stinn) Weihs, was born on March 27, 1923 on the family farm in Grove Township near Defiance, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance and was an active Catholic throughout his life. Wilfred acquired his alias nickname, Tub, as a small child. He attended Grove Township Country School through the eighth grade and then farmed with his father and brothers on the family farm.
On February 11, 1952, Wilfred was united in marriage to JoAnn Hilda Schumacher. They made their home on a farm east of Harlan, Iowa where they raised their seven children: Karen, Connie, Gary, Linda, Mary, John and Toni.
Wilfred spent his entire life being a steward of the land and raiser of livestock, farming the same family site for 80 years. He could maintain and repair most anything from his mower, to the family car, home and farm machinery. Tub was also a builder, constructing two hog buildings. He took great pride in the appearance of his farm and was still mowing it this spring.
