William Eugene Huckins “Billy” was born on November 14, 1934 to Harlan and Gertrude (Stevens) Huckins in Myrtue Hospital in Harlan, Iowa. He attended Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Billy lived the greater part of his younger days in Kirkman, Iowa, where his parents ran the general store and his father was the postmaster and fire chief. When they retired the family moved to Harlan. Billy was employed at White Motor Garage and Doran and Olson Motor for thirty-eight years.
Billy’s father passed away in 1992. In July of 1993, Billy and his mother moved to Kalispell, Montana, where they lived until his Mother’s passing in 2000. Bill longed to return to his beloved Harlan and repeatedly motioned towards the Midwest expressing with his own words, “Home, Home”. At his request, he returned to reside in Harlan, Iowa. The community welcomed and embraced him with special heartfelt attention provided by Roger and Pam Rust. Billy loved life and loved Harlan.
Billy loved visiting with people and playing pool at different places around the square. He worked at different jobs shoveling snow, detailing cars, and picking up trash and cleaning at the race track. He liked motorcycles and hot rods. He wanted a cat and once he got one he named it Cobbler. After two days he was tired of the cat and gave it to Roger as a gift. Cobbler could be seen anytime at Roger’s shoe shop. He died on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan having attained the age of seventy-nine years, eight months, and thirteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Patricia, and brothers Leo and John.
