William Edward Sandiland, the son of Earl and Louise (Jacobsen) Sandiland was born on February 3, 1934 in Avoca, Iowa. He attended school in Avoca and graduated with the class of 1952. After his graduation William entered the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving in Guam.
William was united in marriage to Alice Johnson on October 24, 1958 in Avoca at the Trinity Lutheran Church. After their marriage, William worked as a butcher for a short time and then became a "tree surgeon" retiring in 1995. William enjoyed many activities but his favorite was Nebraska football where he was a season ticket holder to the Husker games for over thirty years and could be seen tailgating at the games. William played softball for many years and enjoyed sports, whether he was watching them or playing them. He loved eating egg salad sandwiches and pumpkin pie. While vacationing in Lake Okoboji, his favorite place to be was Tweeters. William was a member of American Legion Post 0331 of Omaha, the VFW and Electrical Brothers Union No. 1525.
William died at his home in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday, September 1, 2008 having attained the age of seventy-four years, six months and twenty-nine days. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl.
Survivors include his wife Alice of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Thelma Sandiland of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Bev Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Dora Mae Clites of Little Rock, Arkansas; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Charlie Allen, Bill Sutton, John Herdzina, Mark Sandiland, David Sandiland and Greg Sandiland with interment at the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
